UFO Robo Grendizer

Toei UFO Grendizer the final anime of the Toei Mazinger Trilogy, its not my favorite do to many things , like the ending , this show its another Monster of the Week Mecha anime , about Duke Fleed , and his battle against the Vegan Empire, the show tackles this every episode, and it's the same thing over and over , every new character we see gets killed off in the same episode , pros the music and monster designs again are great , cons the characters gets retired very quickly, this is a classic among mecha anime fans , ... looking forward for that remake anime coming soon , this is my review of Toei UFO Grendizer

This one is probably the first anime I ever watched. They showed it on TV during 90s.

It is somewhat simplistic by modern standards and have some silly stuff here and there. Animation is lacking at times. Plot of some episodes is bad. Some characters are stupid.

However overall it is still a very decent show. It has awesome Intro and outro, both music and art. Really cool main protagonist Duke Fleed aa well as his mecha: Grendizer. Gundam and even Go Nagai himself with his Mazinger kept doing more and more mecha shows, but could not reach brilliance of this one.

Grendizer is awesome, I do want ... to pilot it myself. Duke is also cool hero. He does a lot himself, but people around him are mostly supportive and grateful to him.

Opponents look like a stereotypical villains at first, but overtime they develop in rather creative and unique way. They internal politics and squabbles do occasionally come into play.

Art of course dated, but the idea of the design is great. Duke's outfit, helmet and Grendizer itself is awesomely designed. Vegan base on moon is also atmospheric and eerie. Other times design is plant. Authors might be able to do better with more budget or time.

Overall I can recommend it to anyone who likes mecha and good hero driven story. That is if you do not mind old style animation. However it is worth you time, it is better than many others.

The plot in Grendizer is garbage and shouldn't even be looked at. If you look even a little, you'll find a huge number of plot holes. The problem isn't that these are just gaps that can be excused by normal human oversight; we're talking about contradictions within the same episode that seem deliberate. And then there's the excessive use of Pluto Armor, Deus Ex Machina, Ass Pull, and all sorts of other plot absurdities in an unbelievable abundance.

As for the action, it's also awful. The strategies are childish, and the transitions between action sequences are stupid and pointless. Regarding the impact of blows, all that ... happens is that the Duke's cockpit sometimes shakes, but most of the time it doesn't shake even after being hit, making the action incredibly weak. Occasionally, the characters take advantage of their surroundings, but most of the time it's in a stupid way that contradicts the core of the story. For example, the mecha made with advanced space technology (which should make them incredibly durable) are severely damaged by a regular iron anchor, and so on.

The show does have occasional dramas, but they're weak, with trite ideas and more. The characters' interactions with the dramatic events fail to engage or move you. Even worse, some dramatic scenes are crammed with comedic moments.

As for the characters, they're a complete mess. They're poorly written, their actions and behavior are unrealistic and lack depth. There's no character development, except for Koji and the Duke, whose personalities and relationship do develop, but even that development is trivial and ridiculous.

The design of the human and alien characters is bland and unoriginal. The mecha design is simply farcical.

The world is illogical, devoid of creativity, distinction, or depth. It's a world full of contradictions, absurdity, and stupidity.

The production quality is weak, even by the standards of its time. The directing is the most haphazard I've ever seen. The director is completely ignorant of basic directing principles; even someone who'd studied directing on YouTube for a week could produce better episodes. However, the music is an exception. It's energetic and distinctive, and the opening theme is beautiful. Placing the opening theme at the peak of the episodes was a wise decision.
