Re:Creators

Humans have designed countless worlds—each one born from the unique imagination of its creator. Souta Mizushino is a high school student who aspires to be such a creator by writing and illustrating his own light novel. One day, while watching anime for inspiration, he is briefly transported into a fierce fight scene. When he returns to the real world, he realizes something is amiss: the anime's headstrong heroine, Selesia Yupitilia, has somehow returned with him.

Before long, other fictional characters appear in the world, carrying the hopes and scars of their home. A princely knight, a magical girl, a ruthless brawler, and many others now crowd the streets of Japan. However, the most mysterious one is a woman in full military regalia, dubbed "Gunpuku no Himegimi," who knows far more than she should about the creators' world. Despite this, no one knows her true name or the world she is from.

Meanwhile, Souta and Selesia work together with Meteora Österreich, a calm and composed librarian NPC, to uncover the meaning behind these unnatural events. With powerful forces at play, the once clear line between reality and imagination continues to blur, leading to a fateful meeting between creators and those they created.

This show has a strong concept, but it feels empty.

Pros
The overall production quality is above average. The character designs are cool, and their abilities all look distinct from one another. Not your stereotypical elemental magic and swords. The concept is interesting, and they execute it well for the most part. The ending is good. And the story is nothing crazy, but there are quite a few twists, some bad and some are good.
The best part of this show is that they know what the common viewer is thinking. This ... is shown most notably in the last battle. It's hard to explain, but there were multiple instances where you might go, "This is stupid," and the story would actually agree and change that. Very immersive.

Cons
The characters are poorly developed. Some characters either get somewhat fleshed-out backstories or zero backstory. For having 20 episodes, you would think at least one character (besides Souta, the mc) would get a meaningful subplot. But there isn't. Most of the characters are just "something bad happened to me, and I want revenge!" All of these people came from entire games and shows, and that's all they could do? They could cut out half of these characters, and the story would not change at all. Especially the characters that are introduced towards the end. Just powers attached to a name.

The story can get confusing at times. Especially when it comes to one of the characters who has an ability that other people give them. Can we at least see one example of someone giving them these abilities? Who wrote about them having the ability to see who is on their side, who the enemy is, and what they are plotting? It's a cool concept, but some of these abilities are on some bullshit. Just one frame of where they got this ability from would make their ability interesting. And the character who likes to stay neutral has to be one of the most confusing characters of all time. The way they talk is headache-inducing, and their ability is somehow worse.

Overall
Very interesting concept. The production quality is well done and the story is somewhat interesting.But most of the characters are poorly developed, and there are quite a few ass-pulls.





Cons (maybe) (SPOILERS)

In the ending, they make a replica of a character, but they aren't exactly the same; it is based on someone's view of them. And I couldn't help but laugh when this replica said, "I made you for a certain someone!" And then that certain someone started crying. Bitch, you made that replica? Why tf are you crying? That is not the same person, and how would the replica even know the motive of the real one in making Altair? Just putting words in her mouth to cope because they are an envious bitch.

Mixed Feelings

If you got nothing to do and you want something that isn't your usual generic slop, this is good enough.

Pros: Unique, creative, great animation and soundtrack, very meta
Cons: TERRIBLE PACING, Bland and excessive exposition, it shifts awkwardly between serious and meta

Maybe I am just too old for this, younger audiences who weren't exposed to similar themes might lack the wisdom to pick up on contextual clues. Hence throughout the show they keep talking as if you're an idiot that needs to know the context of everything they do. It varies per episode, but I would say on average it's a 70-30 kinda type (70% Dialogue/inner ... monologue + 30% action).

Monogatari serie and Steins;gate pulled it off, I am entertained and it had my attention. But this... it gets worse after every re-watch.

Re:Creators seems to be something akin to an isekai story, with the twist that it's now in reverse: where fantasy characters are moving into our world. It sounds good, but so many things just feel disjointed and boring. Most of all though, is that there's just FAR too much exposition, and far too little of almost everything else. Characters spend way too much time hanging around, talking, speculating and info-dumping. Don't get me wrong, I obviously don't hate conversations in anime, but Re:Creators just takes it way over the top.

There's decent battle scenes too, but most of them also feel sporadic, disconnected, and over-with rather ... quickly... And again, even during battle, the characters find the time to have lengthy conversations and heart-to-hearts.

The characters definitely couldn't save this anime either. Some of them I liked more than others I suppose, like Setsuna and Selesia for example. But overall, none of them are interesting or memorable enough. I didn't even find most of them likeable at all. I dislike the main character especially, because I not only found him boring, cringey and generic, I also hated him due to what he did to one of the other characters.

There are moments where the potential of this anime shines through a bit, and its visuals and sound design are pretty good as well, so it's not like it's ALL bad... But still, at the end of the day, I just didn't find Re:Creators entertaining or good. Its flaws really overshadow its potential, and it ends up not doing its premise enough justice. A shame, because I find the idea of an anime where fantasy characters suddenly invade the real world a very fun one.

For every episode I watched it got increasingly more difficult to keep myself invested. Not only were the story and characters pretty bland and disjointed, I also kept getting bombarded with exposition that drags itself out way too much. Most of it wasn't even that interesting either. To me this anime mostly felt like sitting in class, listening to a teacher drone on and on, not really knowing how to keep their students invested in a subject that could've been fun.
