Yagate Kimi ni Naru

Yuu Koito has always been entranced with romantic shoujo manga and the lyrics of love songs. She patiently waits for the wings of love to sprout and send her heart aflutter on the day that she finally receives a confession. Yet, when her classmate from junior high declares his love for her during their graduation, she feels unexpectedly hollow. The realization hits her: she understands romance as a concept, but she is incapable of experiencing the feeling first-hand.

Now, having enrolled in high school, Yuu, disconcerted and dispirited, is still ruminating over how to respond to her suitor. There, she happens upon the seemingly flawless student council president, Touko Nanami, maturely rejecting a confession of her own. Stirred by Touko's elegant manner, Yuu approaches her for advice, only to be bewildered when the president confesses to her! Yuu quickly finds herself in the palm of Touko's hand, and unknowingly sets herself on a path to find the emotion which has long eluded her.

I rarely to see a romance like this, that doesn't follow the usual formula. The pacing is fairly slow, but I still enjoyed watching the two main characters gradually come to understand their own feelings and what it truly means to love someone. As the story progresses, the reasons behind their actions and emotions become much clearer. Their relationship is developed naturally, step by step, without relying on unnecessary drama.

The relationship between the two main character is built through honest conversations, making every moment they share leave a lasting impression.
The romantic scenes are beautifully presented and are a pleasure to watch(If you really into Girls ... Love). The soundtrack complements each emotional moment perfectly, enhancing the atmosphere and making those scenes even more memorable.

Mixed Feelings

Bloom Into You tells a story about a girl falling in love. Thats right, A girl. One, singular girl, and thats where the story technically ends. By the end of the show, the dynamic between Yuu and Touko essentially doesnt change, but unlike most other reviewers, I wouldnt say this was exactly its biggest flaw. In fact, Im quite certain the premise of a status-quo is uplifted throughout the show on purpose, but I have a serious problem with the way the author ultimately chose to maintain it and portray it.

Yuu is a simple girl and her character has a simple premise; she idolizes love, ... but doesnt truly understand it. No matter what happens throughout the story, she feels confused. There is an important caveat to this, though. Yuu isnt confused about the lack of her own feelings, she is confused about other peoples feelings, their expectations and what they demand of her. Her surroundings make her feel guilty about herself, like there is something wrong with her. Like SHE is the stubborn one, unmoving for no reason other than selfishness. Bloom Into You frequently repeats these motives of guilt, confusion and fear of change in a pseudo-intellectual manner through Yuu, recognizing its okay to "be like that". The show often seems to be glancing at itself in the mirror with understanding, but just as those thoughts are put on display, it immediately chooses to scream the opposite of what it sees directly to the audience. It tries to convince you that these characteristics are in an urgent need of change, but it honestly utterly fails when it comes to the whole "convincing" or "justifying itself" part, which is quite bad when you realize its almost half of the entire show. In reality, Yuu was, from the bottom of her heart, completely selfless to an extreme degree. She is, in fact, so selfless, that openly being taken advantage of, both mentally and physically, was equal to helping someone in need. Thats not love, thats victimizing yourself for the sake of someone who, in my opinion, hasnt earned it whatsoever.

Touko is a profoundly troubled girl. She was suddenly left with a lifelong trauma and a seemingly unreachable goal to go with it at an age where making sense of such a situation is, without a doubt, very difficult to say the least. Instead of her family acting as support and a source of comfort under such sorrowful and stressful circumstances, they shoved a label onto her and made her feel like the only pillar of hope, all for the sake of what they all lost. Under such crushing weight, no one would be left mentally unscathed. Okay, but, I understood that from the first flashback. If you need to repeat the same thing over and over again in order to excuse the actions of someone who is more than self-aware, you wont squeeze any sympathy from me. After awhile, it became nothing more than a sad facade. To see a hurt person hurting another person doesnt evoke many positive emotions, even less so when there is no remorse. If Yuu is completely selfless in this story, Touko is completely selfish. Each time Yuu took a step back, Touko took two steps forward. Its a repeating theme, her taking, and im quoting her directly, "advantage" of Yuu. Of Yuus kindness, understanding, companionship, empathy, sympathy, patience and any other good quality she desired. Its really hard accepting that as "love", and any "Blooming" that might have happened in the show was simply forceful and unfair.

See how both descriptions end with something like "thats not love"? In all honesty, I believe Touko never truly fell in love with Yuu. Touko found comfort, a safe space accepting her as her, not as somebody else. The weight imposed onto her was lifted from her shoulders by Yuu. I do think there is something sincerely beautiful about that, and I believe Touko fell deeply in love with that feeling, with that image, with that status-quo, but never with a person, never with Yuu. If the author didnt try to masquerade this show as a love story, Bloom Into You could have very well been one of my favourite, if not the favourite show, but shallow attempts at justifying a manipulative relationship and all of the things that happen in it as progress towards an inevitable "give in" from both protagonists undermine genuine potential in what could have been an admittedly moving story.

The experience of watching Bloom Into You is like eating a loaf of bread with no jam or butter. Like, you’re making it through. It’s bread, it’s not like bread is inedible. But the whole time you are desperately wishing you had SOMETHING on this goddamn bread.

For starters, if you wanted a cute GL it’s not really that. It’s much more a study on being asexual/aromantic. Which would be totally fine if not for the fact I don’t think it really does a compelling job of digging into that subject matter either. You get a ton of repetitive navel gazing about the inability to feel ... love but it’s just like the exact same sentiment over and over for thirteen episodes with no progression or deeper introspection. Hell, she's frequently harassed by the "love interest" into sexual acts she’s clearly not enjoying and she STILL doesn't have any real thoughts or opinions on that.

Outside that, the general issue I have with Bloom Into You is of it just being constant set up with literally no pay off. It’s a romance with no romance. Characters are introduced to be pivotal only to be forgotten by the wayside. You spend the whole season building up to the big play, you never get to see the play. Hell, the whole time it seems so obvious that the name of the play is going to be the same as the anime only for it to be some random sentence.

It’s a painfully slow character study where I walked out the other end barely knowing anything about either of the main characters. I find it so frustrating that only in the second half of the very last episode do they FINALLY show Yuu having a personality and interests. Girl, where was your love of sea creatures this whole entire anime?!

All in all, the longer I think about it, the less I can find anything I like. I’m not even sure how I finished it, to be honest. I don’t even like the art style, it’s pretty dull and uninteresting much like everything else in this anime. I'm so tired of eating plain bread.
