Adachi to Shimamura

Adachi to Shimamura is one of the best girl-on-girl romances you'll find. While it's a bit slow and the relationship doesn't progress much, that's typical for this kind of story. The personalities of both characters are very believable; they both behave like teenagers in love, experiencing first love, including jealousy, insecurities, not knowing if the other feels the same way, and mundane things like not knowing what gift to give. I'm satisfied with how the story ended. The dialogue is fun and interesting, the voice acting is lovely, and the actors do a good job of portraying our protagonists. Don't expect an explicit or advanced ... romance, but it's sweet enough to spend an afternoon watching two girls discover their feelings for the first girl who understands them.

This is the series' critical flaw: despite being marketed as Yuri, it delivers philosophical musing rather than authentic romantic moments, leaving viewers seeking genuine romantic progression profoundly ... disappointed.

Final Verdict

The series operates in a fascinating but frustrating limbo. If a second season continues the story and deepens the characters' emotional connection, the first season's atmospheric foundation becomes retrospectively justified. Without continuation, however, Adachi and Shimamura remains an incomplete philosophical exercise that fails to satisfy as either romance or conventional yuri—ultimately feeling like a missed opportunity rather than a completed vision.

A pleasantly mature and grounded romance anime that is significantly lacking in its plot development and animation.

As a duo, I like Adachi and Shimamura. It's refreshing to see a couple where both characters are mellow but also subtly delinquents. Their banter is calm and clever. And it's nice to see the story from both of their perspectives, making them a pair of co-protagonists rather than protagonist/deuteragonist. Adachi, in particular, is a well-written character. She's timid and keeps a lot of personal information to herself. She means well, but at the same time she grows more and more eager in her feelings for Shimamura. This results ... in a unique nonverbal style of expression for Adachi, and she has to work on the struggles she causes for herself and Shimamura from her lack of communication plus overeagerness. It's a wonderful intrapersonal and interpersonal conflict.

The other characters, however, are not as strong. Shimamura is detached and passive. This wouldn't be an issue with good writing, but she's not developed in any meaningful way. Why is she so detached from everything? Is she depressed? Why doesn't she like her mother who seems to be decent on the surface? Why doesn't she push back more strongly against Adachi's overeagerness? There's no explanations for her personality across an entire 12 episodes, making her rather flat and unrelatable. Meanwhile, Hino and Nagafuji are bland and forgettable, having neither their own major story nor a significant role in the main couple's story. And, there's a character who's an alien that plays somewhat of a role in the plot early on but then gets relegated to unnecessary comic relief. Every time she came on screen (outside of the first few episodes) felt like wasted minutes that could've been allocated instead to the main couple. So, outside of Adachi moving the plot along, this story feels dreadfully and unnecessarily slow paced.

Finally, there's the animation. In short, it's weak. A lot of still drawings and talking heads. A lot of animation shortcuts. Background characters are not fully drawn, to an extent that is painfully noticeable. Characters will engage in long and beautiful inner monologues with vivid imagery, and nothing in the visuals of the show supports what is being described with words. In short, why am I watching an anime? I might as well be reading a book instead.

Overall, this is a show with enough maturity and a couple that's barely enjoyable enough to trudge through for 12 episodes. With weak animation, weak characters outside of Adachi, and a lack of plot development, I unfortunately cannot recommend this show.
