Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star

Gene Starwind has always dreamed of piloting his own ship out into the vast sea of stars. Unfortunately, not all dreams come true, as he spends his days working odd jobs alongside his partner, James Hawking, on the small planet Sentinel III instead. However, this all takes a turn when the duo takes on a job from Rachel Sweet who, unbeknownst to them, is actually a treasure-hunting outlaw. Tasked with protecting a mysterious girl known as Melfina, the meeting irrevocably changes the pair's lives as they are sent out into the great unknown aboard the highly advanced ship, Outlaw Star.

Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star follows Gene and his ragtag crew as they brave the final frontier, navigating the stars in search of answers to the mysteries surrounding Melfina. Encountering dangerous bounty hunters, space pirates, Taoist mages, and even catgirls, there is sure to be an exhilarating adventure around every corner.

Outlaw Star is still a 10/10 to me after all these years. Back when I was a kid staying up way too late to catch anime on TV, this show felt different. It had that perfect mix of space western swagger, wild adventures, comedy, and moments that actually hit emotionally. Gene Starwind wasn’t some perfect hero either — he felt real, rough around the edges, and that’s what made the journey memorable.

The ship designs, the soundtrack, the atmosphere… man, they just don’t make anime with this kind of soul anymore. Every episode felt like another story told around a campfire somewhere in deep space. Watching ... it now just brings me right back to simpler days.

Still one of the greatest space anime ever made.

Mixed Feelings

Talk about a mixed bag. I started with extremely high hopes. I love the character and world designs, the animation, music, and humor were all striking just the right cords. Within the first 7 or so episodes I was thinking "Man, this could be a 9 or even 10/10 if they can stick the landing". Oh, what might have been...

Well, the narrative really stalled after about episode 9 or 10. Then the quality started to dip and it seemed like things just started happening without rhyme or reason. It half turned into an anthology show despite setting it up as a more story-driven entity ... in the beginning. It's a treasure hunt story that doesn't feel like treasure hunting for roughly half its runtime. The time it wastes not doing lasting character development forces the climax of the story to squeeze it all into the finale on top of one of the worst 11'th hour exposition dumps I've seen in a long time.

Character and art design are fantastic, music is very good, and animation can be extremely good, though it never quite follows through across the finish line like you would hope... It always seems to have a weird cut or transition and you often miss what could be the coolest parts of an action scene.

Speaking of characters, they are a 50/50 split between praise and problem. As I said, I love the designs, all of them have great introductions, potential and flags for ways they could change/deal with their unique issues. The problem is: they don't. Over the course of this 26 episode anime the characters barely interact or change in truly meaningful ways. We get what seem like they will be character episodes that showcase a character's strengths or flaws, but ultimately it either fails to fully live up to its premise or the character growth is completely sidestepped and it's like the whole ordeal never happened.

The more I think about it the more I am bothered with it. Space, magic, technology, military, pirates, outlaws, great character designs and music, stylish presentation, all wrapped up into what should have been a mad race to the prize. I think all the building blocks were here for a 9 or 10/10 masterpiece but they just weren't able to put the roadmap in place and execute on it. Whether it was forced by the production timeline or just a total lack of narrative care from the director, the result remains the exact same: a show that had the perfect building blocks for a masterpiece, but chose to coast on style instead of substance.

I watched this on Toonami when I was a kid and I used to think this was the best show ever. As I re-watched the first 3 episodes, I was faced with action, adventure, and the introduction of dynamic characters. I should have stopped watching right there. My favorite character was Hilda. After those episodes, I watched believing that the plot was going to come together into something deep and exciting. It didn't. After some lolly-gagging around in space and meeting some cool characters, the protagonists take up boring jobs for far too many episodes. The climax of the show was lackluster. Also, I HATED ... how they had their theme song integrated into the show! Once? Maybe. More than two is too much unless it really fits, but, in this case, it just felt super awkward. When one of the characters starts softly singing it (the scene wasn't touching in the least), I couldn't help but to shake my head. If it stuck with being a comedy, I would have loved it, but, it seemed to try too hard at the end to, all of a sudden, become serious and dramatic. I'm not trying to take away anyone else's happiness about this show;just giving the potential watchers a different POV.
