Vanitas no Karte Part 2

Vanitas and Noé Archiviste head out to the town of Gévaudan in search of the "Beast," an enormous wolf-like creature that has slaughtered hundreds of people. Suspecting that the Beast is a curse-bearing vampire, Vanitas primarily aims to heal it using the powers of his grimoire.

Along the way, the two get separated and suddenly travel back to the past—to the exact moment the Beast is lurking in the woods. After a battle against the gigantic wolf and a vampire hunter, Vanitas decides to team up with Jeanne in order to find Noé. Despite being allies, Jeanne's goal is the opposite of Vanitas', as she was tasked to kill the Beast—suspecting it may be someone she used to know.

Meanwhile, a severely wounded Noé is picked up by the mysterious Chloé d'Apchier and her servant. Like Noé, Chloé is a vampire whose existence was erased from the public's knowledge. She has been a guardian for future generations and once tried to find a way to become human again. While Noé is grateful to Chloé for her hospitality, little does he know that she might be siding with forces far more dangerous than the Beast itself.

Already in the first season, I questioned myself if the author had been inspired by Sherlock Holmes. I wasn't surprised to see that it was so. That made me appreciate it much more than I would have otherwise. As someone who read many of Sherlock Holmes' stories, I commend the author in doing the same as Conan Doyle, which is fairly difficult to do. Noé is clearly Watson, Vanitas is Sherlock. Dante represents the Scotland Yard's appeals to Sherlock.

The arcs resemble closely the cases in Sherlock's stories, but after Vanitas discovers what transpired he heals the vampires (instead of turning them over to the ... police). Everything remains a mystery until the very last second, thus why it may seem convoluted, but all is untangled in the end, and then you find out many hints that appeared along the story. One doesn't ever peek into Vanitas' and Sherlock's minds, all is seen through the perspective of Noé and Watson, respectively. That was masterfully done. All the characters have their traumas, but Noé is mostly a "safe port" in the stormy seas of the others' crises; this very much resembles Watson, and provides the viewer with a more stable ground to watch while the waves crash until the storm ends.

Vanitas being a very troubled person with terrible habits and a convoluted backstory also alines well with Sherlock as a character. Whoever has watched House M.D. can understand how Sherlock can be rewritten and yet retain these essentials - we don't need to see a Sherlock-inspired character injecting heroin and laying lethargic in an alley, House M.D. used vicodin instead. Vanitas has a military training (i.e. the chasseur training), a tendency to be alone, bad habits, etc.; but an addiction hasn't been shown, yet one could argue that his being a blood bag to Jeanne can fulfill the same role (a "pleasant" sensation that leaves one lethargic, but also is very harmful to one's health).

Summatim, it's a very good adaptation of Sherlock Holmes with some new additions. One who has read even the smaller stories can see the resemblance and be pleased by it. I'd love to know if Marquis de Sade/Comte de Saint Germain is the Moriarty of this adaptation, but I can't say for sure yet.

The steampunk aesthetic is an ingenious choice since it reimagines the Victorian Era, which also was booming with vampire stories. Carmilla came out in 1872 and Dracula in 1897 - what makes it even more interesting is that the anime takes place in the Paris post-Hausmann Renovation i.e. in the second half of the 19th century. The Galerie Valentine is specially appropriate for this time period in which galleries became a sensation in Paris. If the author didn't read Walter Benjamin's essays on 19th century Paris, it very closely follows his pciture of it: crime stories (Sherlock being an icon, but also Agatha Christie's Dupin), the galleries, the industrial revolution (here represented in the steampunk aesthetic), the conspiracies, etc. Far more than a very good adaptation of Conan Doyle's work, the anime also captures the essence of the time it is set in, which is a very rare occurence. As a fraconphone, I have to admit that the random use of French did sometimes bother me, but it's a vain complaint since it was used to help generate the French ambience.

I have rarely seen other works this dedicated and successful in doing what they proposed themselves to do. Whoever criticises its narrative structure has never come close to reading Sherlock Holmes, but its status as a classic proves that it's more successful than the complaints. I have nothing but praise.

Mixed Feelings

I have mixed feelings about it. The mystery was there, the art was lovely, and many of the settings were beautifully designed — honestly, some backgrounds/art 100/100. There was also some nice character development and progress for several characters.

However, there were still so many unanswered questions, and some characters were left feeling like, “Wait… what? Who is this exactly...?” There’s this bittersweet feeling, like you know there are still many missing pieces. It almost feels like the only way to fully understand the story is by reading the manga, maybe.

Still, there were many moments where the French-style backgrounds looked absolutely amazing, and the romance was ... actually pretty on point.

Part 2 of the show that somehow managed to make it two seasons without giving anything away.

In season one I complained that the show was missing the 5 Ws of basic story telling. I don't know who these characters are, why they're doing this, what are the stakes or even the when and where since they keep bringing up this alternate world/history where vampires hide away from humans YET they keep running into them at random times because plot.

In season two we continue with this tradition. Vartis and Noe's personalities are... yeah I still have no idea. I just know the fanservice sections are given ... far more attention than the normal or fight scenes so they come off as awkward. They also continue in the tradition of having the women "love interests" as stand-in for the two males. Maybe because that's actually hotter than having it straight up Yaoi for some, who knows.

Again this season suffers from tonal inconsistency and VERY focused art.... by that I mean they focus on the fanservice bits and nothing else. That book animation is starting to remind me of Sailor Moon's transformation sequence they use it so often. The budget cuts here are painfully obvious.

I haven't read the manga so I don't know if the author is to blame or the show's director but good GOD was this shambling mess of a plot sloppy and lazy! I actually laughed when a character showed up angry that everyone confused him for a girl only to reveal his name as Astolfo, they even gave him pink hair they were so lazy! They didn't rip off the historical figure from the poem but just copy/pasted the one one from Fate like nobody would notice lol!

Overall season 2 is just as messy as the first, the budget cuts are more painful here and everything is in service of the fanservice scenes. There is no rhyme or reason for anything that happens on screen outside of that it leads to one of the mains being vulnerable/sexy for a few seconds. That's really it.
