Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange

In Tokyo Fire Department's Fire Academy, a talented new rookie is excelling in the strict and grueling rescue training. With high proficiency in both physical and mental categories, Daigo Toake is envied by one of his peers, Shun Onoda. Despite feeling a growing sense of rivalry, Shun recognizes that a part of his jealousy stems from his admiration for Daigo, and that they will eventually work together for the same noble goal of rescuing people.

At the same time, Yuki Nakamura is the only woman among the current batch of recruits. She believes that she will not be outclassed in this male-dominated profession. As the fates of the three newbies intertwine, they may soon realize that the intensity of a real disaster is nowhere near what they have experienced in training. Even so, the heroes in orange will always shine brighter than any fire, saving those in need.

This show is actually really good I do not agree with the MAL score AT ALL. I was in tears for multiple episodes because it feels like real lives are on the line and it captures the anxiety of both the rescuer and the victim so vividly. It makes you feel such palpable relief when they manage to save the victim, and such profound grief for the firefighters who gave everything to save the victim and they still did not make it. It made me appreciate firefighters even more. I also enjoyed the educational aspect of learning about the ins and outs of the firefighter ... job and how demanding it is.

THIS SHOW IS GOOD. Who cares if there's a lot of recap? Skip it!! The middle is still super enjoyable and the cliffhangers are killer!

Firefighting in animation has always been a niche topic, and the original Megumi no Daigo manga stood out precisely because it combined credible operational detail with gripping drama. Rescuer in Orange inherits that legacy, and on paper it does with a solid continuation and more grounded, procedure oriented approach. The anime adaption however, feels more like a misfire than a controlled burn.

As a televised anime it functions, but only in the most technical sense. The production ... comes across as a strained tribute to the manga, bogged down by filler that pads out every episode, direction that feels indecisive, and an almost comical reliance on flashbacks that interrupt narrative flow like constant false alarms. Instead of a clean attack line toward the heart of the story, the series loops back on itself until any momentum is smothered.

Beneath all this is a genuinely strong narrative about two main recruits, with a third member of the team lingering on the periphery, charting their path from probationary trainees to full fledged rescuers within the Tokyo Fire Department. The core material is resilient; the problem is the presentation.

The first half manages to stay structurally sound. The pacing is controlled, the action beats are timed well enough, and the dramatic tension holds. But once the midpoint passes, the show loses integrity fast. The second half collapses under excessive padding to the point where entire episodes feel like reruns of earlier scenes with minimal new material added. It resembles a drill that refuses to end: the same flashback, the same emotional cue, the same dragged out sequence, over and over. Fatigue sets in quickly.

Watching Rescuer in Orange becomes comparable to trying to maintain situational awareness while pop up alerts keep blocking your field of view. You keep advancing in the hope of reaching the powerful story underneath, but the production choices form a constant obstruction. It is disappointing precisely because the source material is so strong. With competent editorial discipline, the adaptation could have been a tight 12 to 14 episode run. Instead it stretches itself thin and loses structural integrity, like an overextended hose line with weak pressure.

The manga remains a standout work, and Rescuer in Orange in print is another excellent entry in the series. The anime, however, rarely lifts the material. The performances are solid, the score is serviceable, and the sound design hits the expected cues, but the limited animation and excessive runtime prevent these strengths from compensating for the broader issues. You could cut half the series and lose nothing essential.

Megumi no Daigo as a whole deserves far more recognition, yet this adaptation does not carry that torch effectively. Instead of elevating the material, it leaves the impression of a project that never fully got out of the staging phase.

Sorry I mean Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange (2023)

This show, honestly, I am so glad it is over. I don't know what people were thinking about commissioning this since there are so many better stories you could do. The show suffers badly from its storyline, lets watch people do a job but make it slightly over the top for entertainment but keep that line. They could have made a show about watching accountants do accounting and suddenly a last-minute client turns up and the music starts. It would be the same vibe as this show.

This is my worst show ... of 2023. It was not needed and it was boring, like literally boring. Also, it did not need a summary episode, I don't care if a show is 12 episodes or 500, a summary is just laziness. I'd rather the studio give people a week off than do a summary, especially this one, it was like propaganda to remind you that you shouldn't watch this.

The animation itself is the only redeeming factor, it looks good, and it is nicely done for 2023/2024. Will it stand the test of time? Absolutely not, This show will be trash in the future, it doesn't have the aesthetic to come back to and certainly not the story.

The sound is okay, doesn't give you the impression of fire fighting or disaster relief but more just basic sounds that don't go through you. This show needed the sound of concrete crumbling to feel like it was coming down beside you but on my surround sound still sounded like it was behind the screen.

The characters are edge lords, they want to be edgy, and they think they are fighting to be the demon lord of edginess. Everything they do is over the top, something you can't do in real life to that extent without serious issues. Is this real? no. Is it trying to be? Yes. The only difference is trying to build in huge issues that are occurring but they just don't land. People get into elite units from day 1, while others get recruited into other units like they are joining MI5 but then sit behind a desk suddenly after they had a traumatic childhood. It just doesn't land, it just doesn't feel like anything but trying too damn hard. They try to show a few different perspectives about coming together because they are friends but also want to sort the issue themselves until they finally realise they need to rely on others, it just hurts to watch. It works in other shows, just not this one.

Overall, I hope this never comes back, I hope it disappears into history. Not all history needs to be remembered. The only thing it had going for it was the current animation level. 2/10. The closing scene is also cringe 500%
