Aru Majo ga Shinu Made

Magic is all Meg Raspberry has ever known. Being raised by Faust, the Eternal Witch, Meg wishes to become a witch as great as her master. However, her life crumbles on her 17th birthday when Faust delivers the worst news possible: Meg has one year left to live. Due to a congenital curse, after turning 18, she will age a thousand times faster than normal and then die in mere days.

Faust tells Meg there is a way to cure her affliction: she needs to consume a seed of life. In order to create the seed, Meg must collect a thousand tears of joy within 12 months. Although she is distraught by the difficulty of the task at hand, Meg nonetheless embarks on the journey to prolong her life, meeting countless people with their own stories to tell.

If Violet Evergarden and Kikkis Delivery Service were combined this is the outcome. Right off the bat I will tell you. This is one of my favorite show of Spring 2025. I was thinking of giving it a 10/10 but I noticed at one point, maybe halfway through the season animation quality seemed to be dropping. I think halfway through the show they might have faced some production issues?

I just loved the premise of the show. I watched it is English dub and thought the same actress who played MaoMao in Apothecary Diaries did the voice acting of Meg Raspberry, who is the main protagonist ... of the show. Her voice acting is good but kept reminding me of Mao Mao which was a bit distracting.

I liked that unlike so many other fantasy anime its not really about how powerful she is. She doesn't seem like a powerful witch at all. But she doesn't need to be as her main objective is to collect the tear drop marbles in her bottle so she can remove her curse.

The moment tear drops are added to the magic bottle, is a beautiful moment because its often done so well.

Kiki is my favorite witch of all time. Meg Raspberry is probably my 2nd favorite, after Kiki. I don't know of any plan for a season 2 but I hope really there is another season.

I liked both the intro/OP and Outro/ED..

Mixed Feelings

Imagine finding out that you only have one year left to live.
How would you choose to spend that final year of your life?
That’s exactly what happens to our protagonist in the anime Once Upon a Witch’s Death.

Now, let’s be honest—
this anime isn’t perfect, but I genuinely enjoyed watching it. One of its biggest strengths is that it doesn’t rely on unnecessary nonsense or forced drama. The story is kept simple and clean.

There are several soft, emotional moments that might genuinely touch your heart. However, this is also where the anime slightly falls short. At times when the story needed to feel more serious, it didn’t ... go as deep as it should have.
As the series moves toward its ending, it becomes clear that while the anime had strong potential, keeping things too simple prevented it from creating a deep emotional connection with the audience.

Still, if you’re in the mood for a light, emotional, short anime, Once Upon a Witch’s Death is a decent watch.
Just don’t go in with very high expectations, watch it for what it is.

The release of this new anime to the market is among the earlier ones for the year, and it was during the period from October 18 to 20, 2025, that I got to see it. The series is an interplay of the supernatural/fantasy drama genres, and even though it is branded a shonen anime, I must say that I didn’t get that typical shonen vibe at all.

What’s more is that the anime centers a woman, an actual female protagonist?, who is the child of the witch Faust, one of the “Seven Sages.” At the age of 17, she learns that she is under a curse ... destined to die soon. The witch does say that there may be a way to break that curse, but how the girl goes about it and the adventures that unfold… well, that’s for you to discover. (No spoilers, promise!)

Now, if I am to describe the whole experience — I could say it is okay. Not bad, not great at all. The plot has no special thrills or strong characters, hence very little, if any, emotion is developed. The whole thing doesn’t captivate you like a powerful fantasy would. It’s a quality anime of a mid-rate — just a light one that can be watched during casual moments or when you want a little fantasy to fill the time.

I wouldn’t really recommend it strongly, but it’s not a waste of time either. If you are into witch or fantasy-based worlds, you can give it one watch. For me, it’s a 6 out of 10— decent enough, but definitely not something I’d rewatch.
