Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi

After an accident sent her family to their deaths in the ocean, Hinako Yaotose keeps returning to the thought of sinking forever into the sea herself. With Miko Yashiro as her only friend, Hinako manages to keep up a semi-happy facade, but whenever Miko leaves her side, she slips into despair. Everything changes one summer when she meets a mysterious girl with eyes as deep and clear as the sea, drawing Hinako in like nothing else has in a long time.

During her absent-minded search for the girl, Hinako is suddenly pulled underwater by a beastly deep-sea creature, only to awaken to the presence of the girl—Shiori Oumi—who takes on a monstrous form and kills Hinako's attacker. Despite this heroic act, Shiori's intentions are no different from any other monster's: she wants to eat Hinako.

The following morning, Shiori walks into Hinako's class as a transfer student, and Hinako cannot help but smile—at last, someone who could fulfill her quiet wish for death has appeared before her.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me is easily one of the most emotionally affecting anime I’ve watched in years.

What impressed me the most is how much of its emotional depth is never directly stated. So much is built through silence, expressions, small gestures and the things the characters choose not to say. Every major character has multiple layers, and even characters I initially expected not to care about ended up feeling deeply human.

Shiori in particular is incredible. Her relationship with Hinako is painful, tender and complicated in a way that never feels cheap or melodramatic. Miko also surprised me a lot, especially because of how ... much genuine kindness there is beneath her more familiar character archetype.

The soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous, and the opening is one of my favorites in a long time. The entire production understands the melancholy of the story perfectly.

At times it reminded me of the emotional intensity of dramatic yuri anime from the 2000s, especially Kannazuki no Miko, but with much more emotional maturity and restraint.

I genuinely don’t know when another anime will affect me this much again. Masterpiece.

Mixed Feelings

This is a good show, though it takes a bit of time to fully set up the characters and their motivations. It’s by episode 5 that the anime fully sets the scene for unfolding events and big reveals. By the end of the show, we come to understand the past events and what set them in motion, however the core conflict is not resolved. Moreover, the main character seems worse off than in the beginning, so I would not recommend this title if you are looking for comfort or if you despise inconclusive endings.

Despite the yuri label, the wish to be eaten is more so ... an exploration of suicidality than queerness. There is a little bit of romantic tension, dates between girls, and emotional experiences that may be relatable to queer youth, though some interactions between the main cast can be written off as something different than romantic love/sexual interest. More so, attraction that the main heroine feels to the titular monster is the expression of death drive - her desire to return to nothingness. While there is some queer subtext in the story, it is important to keep in mind that the show is not a romance and mainly explores the themes of grief and survivor guilt.

Yokai and their designs were very interesting. The visuals were good but music was not so memorable.

There are some inconsistencies in the writing of one of the characters (Miko) so I cannot rate this show any higher.

A show about loss, depression, and rediscovering meaning in one's life. Also some supernatural yokai shenanigans. Unfortunately, the show does not marry these two aspects well and has a serious identity crisis for most of its runtime. To put it simply, although this show has supernatural, romance, and psychological/dramatic elements, if you try to watch it for any one of those things, you'll be disappointed.

Let's start with the supernatural elements of this show. We have a main character who is a yokai, with the very occasional appearance of other trash mobs who try to stand up to her. That's really it. Honestly, with the ... direction the show takes, you could replace every supernatural element with its human equivalent and have the same story. It feels like this part of the show was jammed in to add an extra layer of mystique or intrigue. There are truly entire episodes where the existence of monsters/beasts is a non-factor.

The romantic themes in the show fare no better. Personally, I didn't watch this show for the "Girls Love" tag attached to it, but if I had, I would be very upset. This show only has romantic undertones at best, and that is really stretching the definition for what I would call romantic undertones. Maybe the first and second-to-last episodes are what BARELY qualify this to have the yuri tag, but I wouldn't be surprised if some viewers walked away from this show completely missing that it was supposed to contain that.

Finally, let's examine the drama/psychological element of this show. Although this part of the show is no more fleshed out than the others, it manages to take up most of the runtime. We spend many moments rehashing the same emotional beats with the characters with nothing really changing. This is fine, I suppose, as you could call that a creative choice to demonstrate a character's suffering. In that case, though, you'd need some incredible prose to carry these scenes, but, sadly, that's not what happens here. Here, the story begins to fall flat. You stop caring about motivations. You stop caring about fears. You stop caring about characters. You stop caring, because you've seen the same thing a million times. This is perhaps the most subjective part of the review, but, even as someone who enjoys very slow-burn, psychological/philosophical stories, this just failed to grab me in any way. I think most viewers will start to get very tired of this static plotline by the halfway mark.

To wrap up, this show is just "ok". All things being equal, I would probably score it lower, but, credit where credit is due, the art and music are quite good. Like, seriously, the delicate, bittersweet soundtrack feels like a waste on this show. There are also a few things I didn't mention, like some comedic relief scenes being genuinely funny, where you can tell the VAs were having fun. Overall though, even with a few good things going for it, this show just doesn't manage to break out of the mid category. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not because it's terrible or anything, but because there's no aspect of it that would make me think "oh yeah, X person would like this show!".
