| Idk how many other folks have watched the first half through subbed, but I wasn’t expecting this English dub! Caitlyn Barstow absolutely nailing Tayama’s voice btw. She’s putting in the exact same gravelly quality as the Japanese dub. The cherry on top. I just wish Sasaki had been Tyson Rinehart from Sasaki and Peeps for the potential memes. |

The English and Japanese readings sound about the same, with the English sounding a bit more emotive tbh. Especially Sasaki’s English dub compared to Japanese. |

| @Amun_Nefer you’ve got to be trolling, or delusional, it sounds uncanny right from the start on the rooftop. I’ve said my piece, if you’ve got anything else to say, I won’t be humoring it. It’s not a bias, it’s a well-supported preference. Don’t make assumptions. If it was a bias I wouldn’t even attempt to give the dub a chance, like I have for hundreds of titles. |

| @Old_Greggu nope, just not biased toward dubbed or subbed. I like both. “A well-supported preference” - sounds like a bias there. Everyone has a bias. It’s just how things are. We both have a great deal of anime under our belts and different preferences. One’s preference doesn’t need to require external support. What one likes is what one likes. Also, I thought you were not “humor[ing]” any further replies with a response. |

| Anime elitists can’t understand that some dubs are actually good, cause their brains have “refined” to be more partial towards the “correct” language. Watch anime in whatever language you want it doesn’t matter. Haven’t watched this show in dub personally but shows like AOT, Demon Slayer, Death Note, FMA, among others have pretty solid dubs |

| There really are still mfs out there fighting the sub vs dub debate like the last Japanese island holdouts from WW2. Watch the show however you want to in whatever way is easiest/most comfortable. Between a job, school, kids, or whatever, there’s only so much time in a day for you to sit down and enjoy a hobby, so you might as well enjoy in the way that best suits you |

That’s honestly how the best English as a Second Language speakers learn English. They watch shows and films in English and learn how people actually use English. I’m likely going to be in the same boat soon, as I really want to learn Japanese too. It’s funny when you start listening and learning words and then you look at subtitles and say, “wait, that’s not what that word means at all.” Waiting on E7 is torture. I may do a hybrid watch when it comes back: watching from E7 in Japanese while also watching along in the dub. |

| Ok, I watched the dub. I found Yamada unbearable at first, the squeaky 12 year old sounding thing. But by the end of the episode I had forgotten I ever thought that. A few localising issues bugged me too, even tho the sub also used the same words. Maybe hearing them out loud makes them more annoying? But overall I wouldn’t mind watching the whole thing that way. Either that or improve my Japanese listening skills by 300%… |

It means you have larger budgets. We did have an explosion of great anime between the 90s and 10 years ago, but folks being worried about taking a risk on unusual stories is part of wider trends in media around the world. Tastes in Japan also shift as the population there ages. You also have to remember that Japan itself is a rapidly shrinking market: it will likely lose about 1/3 of its population within the next 50 years. So, the main concern for the companies that make anime is how do they preserve and grow revenue streams? |

Either that or improve my Japanese listening skills by 300%… There are definitely some small, subtle changes in localisation. One thing I noticed was that Sasaki’s colleague apologised to the client less than in the Japanese. I think because apology is such a normal part of Japanese culture, and especially the still highly-feudal Japanese business culture (the one remaining vertical part of the otherwise horizontal Japanese culture). Whereas excessive apologising in most other cultures tends to make people uncomfortable. That, plus some contemporary English slang. |

Even if the dub is arguably good, it still couldn’t match the emotion of sub I think it’s always best to look case by case: Please Twins! is actually a horrendous dub that does sound wooden. Ghost Stories’s dub meanwhile is fantastic in every way. Two opposite ends of a spectrum on dubs. Because I grew up in NYC and spend a lot of time in the UK and Europe, I am used to a wide array of English dialects and accents – one reason the Witch Hat Atelier dub was interesting as Olruggio sounded like he was from Wigan, haha. So, that impacts how I hear things and how people convey emotion across those dialects and accents. Now ofc, if you’re not consistently conveying your emotion fully in a way where the majority of the audience picks it up, that’s not going to be good for storytelling. Another thing to consider is that people think differently depending on what language they use: my brain switches if I’m speaking French, Italian, or Hebrew vs my native English. That happens with everyone though. Languages impact how a person thinks and has deeper impacts on the ways they communicate than just what sounds comes out of their mouth. So, a VA speaking Japanese and a VA speaking English will always think in fundamentally different ways. You could even have that from the same VA if they’re multilingual! Beyond that, we ofc have the individual preferences of the VA thinking what’s the intent of the character in X scene and how can they best convey that? That’s always going to be most crucial. |

I watch a mix of dub and sub but english is my first language so alot of the time its more convenient to just watch a dub if its available when I start watching an anime. Hell I’ve even watched some of my favourite anime in both languages and enjoyed them equally. Being an elitist and displaying your personal preference as a fact and the only choice is such a joyless and needlessly negative way to view life and this hobby that we all love. There’s even some show’s that literally just have beloved dub’s that can be more popular than sub’s. (and I’m not just talking about ghost stories I mean actually serious ones) I find it’s just nice to have a little nuance in life and this hobby, I enjoy dub’s and sub’s but wouldn’t die on the hill of defending either with my last breath anyways I just watch whatever I feel like at the time. I don’t judge people who only watch dub’s at all cause it doesn’t affect MY experience with the anime I have chose to watch in my own way. We should unite as fan’s of this hobby rather than bickering about something as trivial as which language someone watched a show in it’s just senseless elitism. TLDR; You’re always entitled to your own valid opinion about the quality of this dub but it’s just nonsense to say all dub’s are poorly done and it’s an insult to all the talented people in the anime dub and voice acting industry. |

| @landonime, yep! We get a whole other half of the cours to see how things play out for these two! Idk why the show is so good even, it just is, haha. @gravethegrave, hit all the targets in your reply. It’s a sad individual who feels the need to embrace a narrow form of elitism and define themselves by a de facto blanket hatred of something. I spent 15 years in academia (got a nice PhD out of it!), and so I’m all too familiar with that kind of person: someone who masks their insecurities by trying to seem an authority or gatekeep when in reality no one really cares outside a small group of people. The thing is folks who like dubs like subs too. It’s the camp of watch however you like. The sub elitist camp is a collection of odd folks who want to dictate how others should watch (going against the wishes of production committees too btw) and feel special over something truly strange. |

| @Old_Greggu Haha yeah no you’re wrong. I absolutely cant stand most eng dubs and even I can tell you it’s not that bad for Supermarket. You are either biased AF or don’t understand what good voice acting is. I am almost 98% jap dub btw. With rest being chinese dub or english dub where appropriate. Frieren dubs? Yes that is absolute garbage. All that said I am watching super market in original jap dubs one because its good and second because its the original language. The English dub being potentially decent is a bonus I could optionally entertain after if i wanted to. |

And again I said, “good dubs are few and far between”, if it was really a bias it would of been, “there are no good dubs”, I use to give every show i watched a chance for both, after a the first few hundred I gave up, unless I hear talks of it being good. And back to subjectivity, I’m pretty sure there are many who like the Frieren dub, even though I would meme it is objectively bad. | @Old_Greggu btw, that’s a different user (LordKirkis) from me, but your statements seem to be a bit all over the board here. Earlier, you said: “It’s not a bias, it’s a well-supported preference.”, which suggests something based on evidence. You’ve not stated what that evidence is, so no one can judge the merit of that statement. You’re talking about subjectivity which is indeed what all preferences are based on, including this “well-supported” preference of yours. How would you objectively measure Frieren’s English dub as bad? Bad being subjective in and of itself. There is also a major factor you are not taking into account here: how an English dub sounds to the ear of a native speaker of English. It is evident from your own writing that you are not a native Anglophone, and that is fine, but I am a native Anglophone. Connecticut-born, New York City raised, and I have lived for about eight years in the UK in the North (Liverpool) and South (London). So, I am intimately acquainted with the nuances and weirdness of my mother tongue. That does come with its own preferences (I can’t stand Received Pronunciation), but it also means that there are many innate aspects of English that may sound off to you that a native speaker takes for granted. What sounds natural to us may sound off to you sometimes. That’s especially the case if you learned Commonwealth English. Separately, yes, opinions can be very wrong, though not on low-stakes issues like this. More on morality issues. Edit: wait, Black Lake? Please don’t tell me that’s Black Lake in the Black Country outside Brum. I’m not one for accent discrimination (I love Scouse), but if that’s the place you’re from then A, the absolute state of this country, and B, should you really be talking about others’ speech when your own is so heavily attacked? |
