Yeah you got into games way before I did. I did get Lego as a kid, which I loved.

I used to watch my friends play on Gameboy and other handhelds and occasionally borrow them for a bit. Most of the time I had no idea what I was doing, so I don't really remember what I played, haha. And sadly, Pokemon was not something I could play for a few minutes and give back...

Other than that, I have fond memories of playing Halo splitscreen multiplayer at a friend's. Simple, bite-sized, goofy fun.

I played Elder Scrolls Online for a while, around the time High Isle came out. Got into a guild with weekly dungeon runs and everything, but I kind of drifted away. Have you played a lot? What do you like about the game?

My favorite and most-played MMO would be Guild Wars 2. I used to play that with friends, that was a fun time. We haven't played anything together in ages, but I still feel like going back to GW2 sometimes, even by myself...

Haha, maybe detective fiction suits him better than the other stuff.

As mentioned, Detective Conan was one of the few manga/TV anime that I was really into for a while. But my parents found it very silly, just like any other TV anime.


Gotcha. I love that stuff. I actually forgot about this show lately, now moving it up in my Plan-to-Watch list.

Speaking of, what other anime do you think is in the same category? Right now I'm thinking of Yatagarasu and Kowloon Generic Romance, where I was locked in every episode and kept thinking about the episode that I've just watched. Not many shows gave me that experience, but maybe I just didn't look hard enough.


I wasn't watching much live-action TV to begin with, just a few here and there. And then I started watching anime, which just took more time away from watching other media.

The runtime only became an issue as I've watched more and more anime and slowly degraded my ability to sit through longer media. And honestly I've become less enthusiastic about seeing real actors in general...

The Office is episodic, yeah. Another factor that makes it an easy, casual watch.


I got into games a little later than most. Again, my parents were pretty against game consoles, handhelds or even a PC until I was like in middle school. I was still interested in games and played at my friends' whenever I could.

My first console was a PS2, I loved stuff like Ratchet & Clank, Lego Star Wars, God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.

On PC, RollerCoaster Tycoon and MapleStory might be the first games I obsessed over. Call of Duty (the original WW2 game), World of Warcraft and Civilization 4 followed.

Early on I was mainly drawn to the idea of just existing in another world, I think. Wasn't too concerned with the game mechanics, the sense of achievement, or the story, even. Wasn't keen on competitive multiplayer either, mainly because I usually found them stressful rather than fun. What's important to me was the atmosphere, the world, the visuals and music, etc.

I enjoy a wider variety of games for many different reasons now, but I still gravitate towards those kinds of experiences.

I remember you saying you've always been a Nintendo guy. What did you start with?

Ah, that must be nice.

I also have a brother, he had a brief "anime phase" many years ago. He talked about anime sometimes, but didn't try to get me to watch with him or recommend stuff. I doubt that I would've gotten into anime back then anyway, and I think he also understood that...

Funnily enough, by the time I got into anime he'd already moved on, and he doesn't seem keen to get back into it now. We just enjoy our respective hobbies these days.


I see, so the normal way people discovered and engaged with any media IRL... Don't know why this never occurred to me, haha.

A lot of what you described can be applied to my video game hobby back then. News sites, magazines, ads, window-shopping, demos/samplers...


Whoa, you had a place that sold manga? That might've got me a bit curious, if there was one back then.

Back in Korea there was a small manga rental shop in the neighborhood. I rented and read volumes of Detective Conan for a while. Sadly I didn't venture out more, though, before losing interest. Partially because manga was far less popular than anime among kids.


I'd say it was more kids my age.

As a teen I didn't experience or witness bullying stemming from animanga habits, but there was some vague shunning and othering, I think. "You like Japanese cartoons? Huh, that's weird. Anyway..." No way to know for sure now.

Parents generally disapproved of most entertainment media that kids/teens would be interested in, and just tolerated them at best. They did love and encourage movies (including Studio Ghibli movies), for which I am grateful.


That's awesome. The anime kind of demands your attention, doesn't it?

I have heard of Dark. I've been intrigued by it for years without really jumping in. Mainly because I've stopped watching live-action TV shows for a while now... Would you say it's a similar show to Tengoku Daimakyou? I heard it was a time-travel mystery?

This is completely different, but recently I've been trying to get back into watching TV shows, so I'm slowly making my way through The Office. It's a show that I used to love but dropped mid-way, and it was easy to pick it back up. It also helps that it's a light comedy, and the episodes are only 22 minutes long, which suits my anime attention span.

Hopefully I get used to TV shows again and check out longer shows like Dark.

You might be right. I often feel like I'm missing out on (or avoiding) huge swaths of the medium, like I've never seen Dragon Ball, the Big 3 or Attack on Titan. But then again, those aren't requirements or indicators that someone has "embraced" anime, I guess...

I'll simply say that watching anime let me embrace more of it. And even discover new genres and styles. Before anime, I wasn't familiar with slice-of-life as a real story genre, for example - now I really like the genre. I'm even enjoying live-action movies in that style, more than before.


That's interesting. How did you discover and obtain new manga and anime? Was manga widely-accepted at your school? Or was it more like people just minded their own business?

I used to live in Korea as a kid, which meant that anime and manga were popular children's entertainment that was basically impossible to avoid. If anything, I was in the minority for not caring that much about Dragon Ball or Pokemon.

Then I moved to Canada, where animanga was more niche in comparison and was associated with more negative stereotypes. I think that kind of discouraged me from getting into it (not that I was particularly interested to begin with). I did hang around Asians a lot, many of them anime fans, so I was always kind of aware of it.

By the time I got into anime, anime had gotten pretty popular here, and most people were now too old to be making fun of other people's hobbies and interests.


Yeah that's a lot to think about...

I got into anime on my own, basically on a whim. I was a movie and video games guy. It wasn't like I fell out of love with those, but around that time I wasn't enjoying them as much. Anime felt fresh and different, and it was fun discovering more of it. That was enough, and the individual shows made sure I stayed with the medium.

The anime medium might be strong enough to grab you even if you got into it now for the first time. But as you say, you'll probably have to do some research and get lucky with finding the good stuff.


What made you get back into anime? Was there a specific show?

I enjoyed S2 overall. It was cool to see the story grow in scale, and there are some really tense and emotional moments. I just prefer the vigilante/resistance/thriller style of Season 1.

Speaking of tense, I liked Suzaku's mass murder event more than Euphy's. That was also kind of Lelouch's fault ("live!") and was a cruel twist of fate with very real and personal consequences for him (Nunnally). It had good build-up of tension and a tricky dilemma with clear references to the atomic bombings in history.

But also S2 turned into a huge mess. The last few episodes were such a blur that I can't even remember how things went down anymore...

As for the very end with what happens with Lelouch, it's definitely daring and memorable. Can't believe they went there. As you say, it's probably a little naive, as if that's going to fix the world... And it did feel a little like a shock-value ending. Maybe I got shell-shocked over the final episodes and lost the thread.

What's your take on the ending? And maybe S2 as a whole?


Good to hear you enjoyed EoE. It seems to be the consensus that it's an improvement over the series ending.

I do plan to watch it at some point. It's just that I've seen the first few episodes before, and I found it a bit too gloomy and mopey. I'd have to get in the mood for it. Do I have the wrong idea about the show?


I did watch some anime on TV as a kid, but it was pretty low on my list of interests. I loved Studio Ghibli films growing up, though. I've been around anime-watchers throughout school and work, but never taken the step myself. I've read a few manga, but it's always been a one-off.

My feelings towards anime has been pretty weird, as you can guess. I understood that anime was a legitimate art form and storytelling medium. That only applied to movies, though. I just rolled my eyes on the TV and popular franchise stuff, with all the childish, "anime shit" going on in them. I guess that makes me a snob.

I can't really say whether my attitude has changed a lot since I've started watching anime, honestly. I don't think I've come to "embrace" anime wholeheartedly. Anime is anime, and I just find things in it to enjoy and love. I've definitely gotten more used to the medium, and understand and tolerate "anime shit" a bit more now. I've grown to appreciate art and animation more, for sure.

Also, I will say that as I grew older, I've come to not worry as much about what other people think. Or what "better" things I could be doing instead. Ironically, at this point in my life there aren't many people I can talk anime with.

Tough question, haha, haven't really thought about it.

You've been around anime since you were much younger. How would you say your feelings have changed over the years?

Don't worry they've actually cut a scene from the manga XDD as in some Nakamura's day-dreams

i'm so glad you liked them! especially kakeochi girl! you should check out some of Battan's other stuff as well if you can find them. Kakeochi girl is def my favorite of hers, though. I haven't finished the other works in order to rate them, but i liked where they were going.

Definitely my take on Manhole as well! i liked it a lot. it's been a few months since, so i don't recall my exact thoughts on it. I believe i had some dissatisfaction with the ending. it felt abrupt, like they had a lot more planned and maybe failed to find a publisher or something.
I was recently reading another fairly disgusting manga, called... tonari no Jiisan
I like visceral horror and the grotesque a lot, so it wasn't a difficult read for me, though it definitely killed my appetite. Sexual horror is what i really can't sit through. IG i'm not good with jumpscares either XDD don't really have those in manga, though!

another horror/psychological manga i read recently that i liked quite a lot - and it's not really gory - is Minasoko nite. the first couple chapters are the strongest, IMO. Funnily enough, Tonari no Jiisan has some similar themes, particularly in regards to the denialism and small town conformity. I don't think it's as tightly written, but the horror is more visceral, and if you don't have the stomach for the creepy mermaid aspect, you might tolerate that one better.

Oh def watch sub, avoid the english dub like the plague! I'm not sure if german dub followed the english one or was faithful to the OG, i got lucky with the italian dub being very faithful

Any fav characters so far?

Oh i buy all my manga volumes xD loath reading digitally with a passion, i'm too slow and it burns my eyes out

Started reading it waaaay before the anime was announced, but read it at snail speed and now the anime is here xD i just wanted to finish vol. 1 before starting to watch

Also ich fand, dass Scarlet schon sehr solide produziert und nicht frei von guten Ideen war, aber ich fand das Ganze doch ziemlich konfus. Also da hätte man sich etwas mehr fokussieren müssen, weil es so letztendlich irgendwie banal wirkte. Auch hätte man die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Protagonisten für meinen Geschmack stärker ausbauen müssen, damit der Romance-Aspekt besser funktioniert.

Wie war so dein Eindruck?
