I find as time passes, I intermittently revisit my ratings of anime. I tend not to rate anime that didn't give much of an impression to me, and now too much time has passed for me to fairly assess them. Plus if I had to rate most of the anime I've watched over the years, I'd have to probably give them a low rating, and I'd rather be positive than negative if given the choice. Generally, though, I have become more generous over time with how I rate things, and less interested in conveying some sense of self-importance with my decisions.

Something is a masterpiece for me if it does something I find unique and special in anime, or if it has particularly enchanted me. Or if it's just something I feel like giving a 10 anyway. Besides, I don't think MAL ratings are meant to be taken that seriously in the first place.

I have found the things that are a 10 are often things I've returned to over and over, and that fact alone is the most honest measure of what value means to me, and in turn that rating a reflection of how important each of those stories must be for me to revisit them so persistently.
